Will I get into the University of Texas at Austin?

Question by Kiara B: Will I get into the University of Texas at Austin?
I have been reading up on the University of Texas in Austin and it seems to be a good fit for me. I have a 4.41 weighted GPA and a 3.7 unweighted GPA (top 9 % of class). I got an 1850 an the SATs (or 1300 critical reading and math). I am president of FCCLA, vice president of ecology club, and treasurer/historian of science club. I am in National Honor Society and National French Honor Society. I am in a Math and Science Center program at my school. I also have 200+ hours of community service. Lastly, over the summer I volunteered most of my time at the Capital Area Health Network, a healthcare system in my area. I know it is hard for out-of-state students but I am very interested in this school. I would probably apply for the school of natural sciences. Also, I am African-American and I do not live in Texas, so the 10 % rule does not apply to me. I have been getting varying answers and am slightly confused. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
I understand about how most of the school is from Texas, which is the reason I am asking the question. Do you think, after they admit all of the students from Texas, do I have a chance as an out-of-stater?

You have to understand one thing about Texas schools: they take Texans first before they take others.

Your GPA is nice, your SAT is nice, and your extracuricular activities are nice….but keep in mind that I’m a senior from Texas and I’m applying to UT as well

and if it comes down to you and me for the last spot, it’s going to be me that gets it.

Im sure you will make it. THat is not true that they always take texans before out of state. I attend the university of austin, and there are enough out of state students to know thats it is possible to get it in.the 10% rule kind of sucks. I was in the top 17% and I still got in. Also I failed two classes in high school so my GPA was not that high. Whenever people ask how I got in. I tell them that this is what I had going for me: lots of extracurriular..natl honor society… womens crisis center… and I worked at a hospital for a year. Also get a million people to check your essays because you can only turn them in once. Mine were about my goals to be a nutritionist and what caused my passion for this subject area and how I learned so much from working a minimum wage job. Its true that your essays dont have to be a on a special topic or some emotional plea, they just have to express yourself… thats important in your application. Sadly, Im hispanic and they do admit ppl judged on race. (i dont believe that should be a factor).

good luck and dont spend our last year of high school worrying about it

ps i got into the school of natural sciences..its not something to worry about.. if they did accept you into the liberal arts college you can immediately transfer over.
